After Ukrainian President Zelensky’s meeting with US President Trump in the White House, both initially kept a low profile on the subject of tomahawks. Some US media want to know more.
According to media reports, Ukraine cannot hope for a delivery of US Tomahawk cruise missiles for the time being. US President Donald Trump refused to give the Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyj permission to do so at their meeting in the White House in Washington, among others, the “Axios” portal and the broadcaster CNN reported, citing informed sources.
The meeting was “not easy,” Axios quoted a source as saying. Another source even described it as “bad”. The meeting, which lasted several hours, became “a bit emotional” at times. According to CNN information, the discussion was tense, open and at times “uncomfortable”.
Zelensky had traveled to Washington with the plan to once again ask the US to supply the long-range Tomahawk precision weapon. With their help, Kyiv could play a more offensive role in the war. The Ukrainian army could fire the cruise missiles far into Russia. Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian war of aggression for more than three years.
Trump has been torn on the subject of tomahawks for a long time. He appeared willing to talk about the weapons, but at the same time emphasized several times that the USA also needed the Tomahawks itself.
Trump made no mention of the Tomahawks in his first post on Truth Social after the conversation with Zelensky. At a press conference after the meeting, Zelensky referred to a request from the US side not to discuss the issue further publicly. “The USA doesn’t want any escalation,” said the Ukrainian, explaining his request. Nevertheless, the topic is not off the table, at least for him. “We have to work more on this,” he emphasized.
