Putin rejects ceasefire – and makes further demands

Vladimir Putin has rejected a general ceasefire in Ukraine. On a phone call to Donald Trump, however, he agreed to waive attacks against energy systems.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin rejected a general ceasefire in the Ukraine War. This emerges from statements by both governments after a phone call with US President Donald Trump. Instead, the Kremlin emphasized that Moscow was only ready for a comprehensive solution, taking into account his “legitimate security interests”. Trump had campaigned for a 30-day break, which is now only to be implemented very limited.

According to the Russian explanation, Putin has agreed to forego attacks against energy infrastructure facilities in the next 30 days. “The Russian president reacted positively to this initiative and immediately gave the Russian military a corresponding command,” says the Kremlin’s message. At the same time, Putin again called for the “complete cessation of foreign military aid” for Ukraine.

The White House said both heads of state agreed that the conflict had to be ended by a “permanent peace”. However, concrete progress for a general ceasefire has not been made. The US government emphasized that Trump’s 30-day stop of attacks on energy infrastructure could be a first step towards a “complete break”.

Trump and Putin also agreed to start negotiations on a ceasefire at sea in the Black Sea.

In its message, the Kremlin focused on Russian demands: In addition to the hiring of western military aid to Kiev, the “end of forced mobilization in Ukraine” was also necessary in order to initiate further steps for de -escalation. In addition, Russia accused the Ukrainian government of having “repeatedly sabotaged and injured” agreements. Furthermore, the Kremlin Ukrainian fighters accused “barbaric terrorist crimes” against the civilian population in the Kursk region.

According to Washington, both agreed that Iran should not be able to destroy Israel.
