Scientists have discovered a natural compound that can stop the progression of some types of cancer and nerve cells such as multiple sclerosis (MS). This study conducted by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) was possible thanks to years of work of students at the University of Portland.
In the examinations, a flavonoid compound called sulfuretin found in plants neutralized an important enzyme associated with cancer and MS.
Scientists observed that Sulfuretin stopped the activity of this enzyme in their experiments in the laboratory environment. Now, it is planned to examine therapeutic effect, safety and possible side effects of this substance on animals.
Hopeful discovery against diseases
Larry Sherman, one of the professors conducting the research, thinks that this discovered compound can be used in the treatment of many different diseases. Sulfuretin, a hyaluronidase called an enzyme was found to prevent the functioning. This enzyme can disintegrate hyaluronic acid in the body and cause some diseases.
The disintegration of the hyaluronic acid can delay the repair of the myelin sheath that protects nerve cells. This is associated with MS, paralysis, brain damage and some types of dementia. It can also lead to uncontrolled proliferation of cancer cells. Scientists think that Sulfuretin has the potential to stop this process.
Healing from plants
This important discovery emerged as a result of many years of research at the University of Portland. Chemistry Professor Angela Hoffman and his students examined the different compounds they obtained from plants one by one and tried to determine the effective ones against diseases. As a result of these years of studies, Sulfuretin was one of the most promising compounds.
Scientists who contribute to this research think that Sulfuretin can benefit not only in cancer and MS, but also in other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Now, the effects of this compound on human health will be investigated in more detail.
