More than 20 dead in Russian rocket stroke on Sumy

The city of Sumy in the northeast of Ukraine is always the goal of heavy Russian air strikes. This time it hit the city center – with devastating consequences and possibly dozens of victims.

According to the Ukrainian Minister of the Interior Ihorm Klymenko, at least 21 people were killed in a severe Russian rocket strike against the city of Sumy in the northeast of Ukraine. Many people were also injured in the middle of the street, in cars and public transport as well as in houses, he said at Telegram. According to the national police, there were at least 83 injuries, including 7 children.

The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj spoke of a terrible attack with Russian ballistic rockets in the morning. While the people went to the church on Palm Sunday to commemorate the move -in of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, an enemy rocket had hit the city, Selenskyj said at Telegram.

There was therefore damage to streets, houses, a training facility and several cars. Lifeless bodies on the streets, burning cars and severe devastation were seen in pictures.

The city’s authorities said that a crisis team had been set up. Many buildings showed damage.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha spoke of a “war crime”, of “absolute evil” on an important Christian holiday. In communications on platform X, he and Selenskyj called for a determined reaction of the international allies. Sybiha criticized the fact that Russia did not agree to a US proposal on March 11 for a ceasefire in Ukraine.

“Instead, Russia expands its terror,” said Sybiha. He asked the western partners to equip Ukraine with additional air defense capacities and increase the pressure on Moscow. “Strength is the only language you understand and the only way to put an end to terrible terror,” he said.

Sumy is always the goal of attacks. Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for more than three years.
