Three other people came into police custody after the fatal attack in the Alsatian Mulhouse. The anti-terrorist prosecutor said this one day after the attack. The authority did not give any details of the people. The alleged perpetrator is still in custody.
After an attacker – armed with a knife and a screwdriver – had started several people in a market on Saturday afternoon in Mulhouse (Mülhausen), the anti -terrorist prosecutor investigates killing and attempted killing with terrorist reference. France’s President Emmanuel Macron described the crime as an Islamist terrorist.
According to investigators, the alleged perpetrator called “Allahu Akbar” in his attack (such as “God is greatest” in Arabic). A 69-year-old Portuguese was killed. The attacker also injured three other people, and ultimately overwhelmed police officers. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said late Saturday evening that the perpetrator had attacked urban employees for parking space surveillance. The anti-terrorist prosecutor had spoken of police officers before.
Mulhouse is a 100,000-inhabitant city near the border to Baden-Württemberg. The suspect is a 37-year-old Algerian, as Interior Minister Retailleau said. The man was convicted of glorification of terrorism and had psychological problems. He came to France irregularly and had to leave. Despite multiple inquiries from France, Algeria did not withdraw the man.
