Klaver combines the severity of left-wing content with a lightness of style. Now he should bring together the Social Democrats and the Greens to form a new movement. A real challenge.
“Political leadership means sometimes taking a step to the side,” Klaver said on Monday. He knew that time was on his side. But the new strong man on the political left is far from reaching his goal.
“I’ve spent half my political life with the Greens, now it’s about building something new,” said Klaver. “We now want to fight together for all the ideals that you fought for,” says Klaver in response to criticism from the social democratic core milieu. They once called him “Isaiah” because of his charismatic style. Now the political prophet is supposed to bring red and green together. Not just the whole thing. The party has to get out of its red-green core milieu. Klaver knows dogmatism. And the fear of change. He only says: “We can now insist on our positions or find solutions that the country urgently needs.”
