US Vice President JD Vance plans to visit his wife Greenland. However, the journey is criticized by the Danish government.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance will accompany his wife Usha Vance on Friday while visiting Greenland. Among other things, he wanted to “look up on security,” said Vance on Tuesday in a video message spread on online networks.
“Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday triggered so much excitement that I decided that she shouldn’t have all the fun alone, and that’s why I will agree with her,” Vance continued at his message.
Just a few hours before Vances announced, the Danish Prime Minister Mette Fredersiksen had criticized the visiting plans of Usha Vance and several US government members in Greenland and spoke of “unacceptable pressure”.
In the past few days, several US representatives had already announced that they want to visit Greenland this week, among them the national security consultant Mike Waltz. The White House itself had announced the visit of Usha Vance, according to press reports, US Energy Minister Chris Wright should also travel to Greenland.
US President Donald Trump had already stated in his first term in 2019 that he wanted to buy Greenland. Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has said several times that it wanted to bring the Arctic island area under US control. Greenland and Denmark decide an annex.
Only 57,000 people live on the largest island in the world. Valuable raw materials are stored in the soil that have so far hardly been used. Greenland has been autonomous in many areas since 1979, but the former colonial power of Denmark still decides on foreign and defense policy.
