The Turkish government represents a very conservative family picture. A draft law that has now become public not only threatens to massively circumcise the rights of trans people.
In Turkey, people who do not behave according to traditional gender roles could be punished in the future. Opposition, lawyers and interest groups raise an alarm because of a corresponding draft law, which has not yet been officially brought in and, according to media reports, is to come from the government’s ranks.
In the unofficial paper, which the news agency dpa has, it says, for example: a person, “publicly encourages, praises or promotes to behave against the innate biological gender and general morality,” is punished with a prison sentence of up to three years. The draft also provides prison terms for non -heterosexual couples of up to four years if they hold a symbolic wedding. Same -sex marriages are not allowed in Turkey.
In the event of gender -relevant measures, the minimum age should be increased from 18 to 21 according to the draft. In addition to judicial permission and a psychological report, those affected must demonstrate their permanent infertility through a certificate that is intended to issue a hospital approved by the state. Among other things, it is said that the “institution of the family” should be protected. The ruling AKP declared the “year of the family” in 2025.
Gökce Gökcen, politician of the opposition CHP party, sharply criticized the design. If a man wears a skirt or nail polish, this can therefore already be seen as a crime. She called the draft a “threat to human rights” because of its vague formulations, which could include everything. The organization Kaos GL sees multiple broken laws that crime the “existence” of many people. How and whether the design is brought into parliament is unclear.
