Trump’s deportation offensive is increasingly taking on new forms. ICE agents in Minnesota are resorting to a treacherous strategy.
Masked and armed, ICE agents are moving through predominantly Democratic cities in the USA as part of Trump’s deportation offensive. Their goal: deport one million migrants every year. Resistance has formed in the US state of Minnesota, but also in other parts of the US, especially after two people were shot by ICE agents in Minneapolis. Using whistles, homeschooling and other tactics, neighborhoods tried to protect themselves from Trump’s roving deportation soldiers. Now the authority appears to have changed its strategy.
According to reports from residents in Minneapolis, ICE agents are now disguising themselves in order to discreetly observe migrant areas of the city. Agents appeared in front of his restaurant disguised as construction workers wearing high-visibility vests and safety helmets, owner Luis Ramirez told the Associated Press.
After googling the electrician company advertised on the white van and finding no results, he decided to approach the men. As he stood at the vehicle, he saw that the men were armed with typical ICE equipment under their disguises: firearms, handcuffs and tear gas.
Legal advice centers in Minnesota are now reporting a growing number of similar tips. According to this, ICE agents are said to have posed as construction workers or delivery drivers, among other things. In some cases, it was even reported that officers disguised themselves as anti-ICE activists.
Naureen Shah, director of immigration at the American Civil Liberties Union, sharply criticized the move: “That’s how you act when you’re trying to control a population – not when you’re conducting routine, professional law enforcement.”
Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues to thwart investigations into the killings of Nicole Renée Good and Alex Pretti. Since the incidents, critics have been calling for a transparent investigation and criminal proceedings. However, Trump and his administration do not see any criminal behavior on the part of the agents involved.
