In Minneapolis, an ICE agent shoots a woman in her car. The authorities speak of self-defense and claim to have thwarted an act of terrorism.

In Minneapolis, US immigration authorities ICE shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in her car. Videos of the incident show officers asking the woman to get out of the car. As she tries to drive away, an agent fires several shots through the window from a few meters, first from the front and later through a side window. The agency said the officer acted in self-defense and prevented an “act of terrorism.”

The videos show the agents approaching the woman’s stationary vehicle. The vehicle is standing – apparently as part of a blockade – partly on the road and partly on a hard shoulder. The officers ask the woman to get out. One tries to drag her out of the car through the window. After a few seconds, she tries to leave the situation by driving away sideways without driving towards an agent. An agent standing diagonally in front of the vehicle draws his pistol and fires first through the windshield and later through the side window into the vehicle. A total of three shots can be heard. The car rolls further, then crashes into other parked vehicles.

Police said the woman died of a shot in the head. Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the woman was about to drive away when shots were fired at her. There is no evidence that ICE is investigating her. “I am beyond concerned that a woman who sat in her car blocking the road and was not the target of any investigation is now dead.”

Interior Secretary Kristi Noem said the agents were stuck in their vehicles in the snow when the woman suddenly attacked them. Jacob Frey, the mayor of Minneapolis, contradicted this account. The self-defense narrative is a “garbage story.” Frey told ICE: “Get the hell out of Minneapolis.”

The mayor continued: “They are tearing families apart and bringing chaos to our streets.” The city must now be “the best version of itself”: “We are better than a bunch of ICE agents sent to cities across the country to tear families and communities apart.” He understands the anger of his citizens. “But don’t give them what they want.” Minneapolis should respond with love instead of hate.
