FCC boss Brendan Carr is calling on US broadcasters to broadcast more patriotic content to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The Pledge America Campaign aims to create programs that emphasize national values, history and civic education. This is what Politico magazine reports. Carr suggested, for example, recordings of the national anthem, historical specials or music by American composers as program items.
However, the initiative has met with clear criticism. Observers see this as an attempt to exert political influence on media content – to the detriment of the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the press. Democratic FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez also expressed concerns: The best contribution to the national holiday is to defend the First Amendment and resist government interference.
Whether and how the broadcasters will respond to the appeal remains an open question – especially since some are currently waiting for regulatory decisions from the FCC. Carr emphasizes the voluntary nature of the project and points to the social value of civic education formats.
