HE DIED IN ORDOS, WAS TAKEN ELSEWHERE
According to historical sources, Genghis Khan died around Ordos, within the borders of today’s Inner Mongolia, during his Western Xia campaign. However, it is thought that he was not buried where he died. According to rumors, his body was first embalmed and then secretly moved to Mongolia. The strongest claim is that his grave was built around Burhan Haldun, who is considered close to the land where he was born.

WERE THOSE WHO KNEW THE TOMB KILLED?
One of the most striking narratives about Genghis Khan’s burial process is that those who knew the location of the grave were eliminated. According to legend, the soldiers carrying the corpse, people who witnessed the burial, and even some people along the route were killed. The aim was to keep the location of the grave secret forever. This narrative is considered one of the strongest folk narratives explaining why the tomb could not be found for centuries.

EVERYTHING HAS BEEN HIDDEN
Another reason why the grave could not be found is interpreted as the burial area being specifically chosen. While some researchers argue that the grave is in a mountainous and hard-to-reach area, others claim that the grave was trampled by herds of animals, the soil was leveled and all traces were destroyed. Some areas, considered sacred, remained closed to the outside world for many years, making searches difficult.

SATELLITE SCANS COULD NOT FOLLOW THE SECRET
In recent years, a lot of work has been done to find the tomb of Genghis Khan using satellite images, ground-penetrating radar and archaeological surface surveys. Despite this, no definitive conclusion could be reached. The fact that some circles in Mongolian society argue that the grave should never be opened makes this search more sensitive. Thus, the lost tomb of Genghis Khan continues to live as the greatest secret where history, legend and obscurity are intertwined.
