France’s Premier Lecornu is looking for a way out of government crisis

Macron has set a 48-hour period to the resigned Premier to find a way out of the political crisis. Lecornu has two priorities in the consultations.
France’s prime minister Sébastien Lecornu surprisingly resigned on Monday, consultations with party leaders started a way out of the government crisis. Lecornu met in the morning with the party leaders of the middle alliance of President Emmanuel Macron and the chairman of the two chambers of parliament, the government said. In the afternoon and Wednesday morning, he wanted to advise himself with those responsible for the other parties.
After his resignation, Lecornu had been commissioned by Macron to have last talks with the political forces to stabilize the country until Wednesday evening and to find a way out of the crisis. Lecornu proposed the party leaders to concentrate the discussions on the budget for the coming year and the future of the French overseas area, the government said. Both topics would have priority for all parties.
The Prime Minister Lecornu, who started four weeks ago, had resigned on Monday morning. The composition of his cabinet presented the previous evening had met with criticism in the conservatives. The chairman of the Républicains, the Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, confirmed in office, had threatened with a withdrawal from his party from the new government because he saw it inadequately represented there.
