The United States has taken a new course in foreign policy since Donald Trump’s inauguration. A former US military caressed the procedure clearly.

The Trump government’s foreign policy course is also not without controversy within the US military. The former supreme commander of the US armed forces in Europe, Ben Hodges, criticized the new Ukraine policy of the United States in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper. “After all the loud talk that the problem can be solved in 24 hours, the credibility of this president and this government will be badly damaged by this failure.”

Trump’s Ukraine course would not only be “humiliation”, but also endanger the national security of the United States. Hodges said: “It is about the protection of American, strategic interests. Our economy, our prosperity is directly connected to the prosperity of Europe.” Putin’s goal is greater than just conquering Ukraine – in the long run his goal is to “break NATO”.

The allies from Europe, Canada and Australia to be spoiled, evidence of political short -sightedness: “If the president says: ‘Not our soldiers, not our war’, then this testifies to me from a very superficial understanding and a very superficial concern for the actual interests of America.” Hodges speaks of “betrayal” to the allies of the United States.

At the same time, he appealed to the federal government – Germany also has to take on more responsibility internationally. Hodges said the “picture”: “Germany, as the largest and most powerful economy, of course has to take the lead here. And I think other European countries are waiting for Germany to be able to proceed with a good example.”

In the election campaign, Donald Trump had declared peace in Ukraine to be one of his top priorities-even if he quickly refrained from his 24-hour goal. Since then, the diplomatic efforts of the United States have been characterized by an approach to Russia.
