Former FBI chief James Comey has to appear in court for the first time today. The 64-year-old is accused of telling an untruth during a questioning in the US Congress in 2020 and of obstructing a congressional process. Donald Trump, who recently publicly called on the Justice Department to take legal action against political opponents, welcomed the indictment against his arch-enemy.
Comey became an enemy of the US President because, as head of the US domestic intelligence service, he had investigated possible Russian influence in the 2016 election won by Trump. In the run-up to the court date, leading demo cards sharply criticized the proceedings. During questioning by the Senate, Democratic senators accused Attorney General Pam Bondi of trying to satisfy the president’s desire for revenge. Trump himself had stated that he could imagine having more of his political opponents indicted.
Meanwhile, criticism of the approach comes not only from Democrats. In an interview with MSNBC, former Deputy Attorney General Donald Ayer said: “What the Justice Department is doing under Donald Trump has nothing to do with justice.” The government has given up even pretending that it is about impartial justice, Ayer continued. “They have appointed people who are completely unqualified, they are targeting the president’s enemies.” Ayer is referring to Erik Siebert. The Virginia prosecutor resigned after considerable pressure after refusing to file charges against the former Comey. His successor was Lindsey Halligan, a former lawyer for Donald Trump who had no previous experience as a prosecutor and most recently worked in the White House.
The newly crowned Nobel Prize winner in physics, John Clarke, has sharply criticized the cuts in research budgets pushed by the US government under President Donald Trump. “This is a really serious problem,” said the 83-year-old American at a press conference. “It will cripple much of the scientific research in the United States.” Here you can find out the background.
