While Putin in Moscow demonstrates his military power at a parade, EU foreign ministers demonstratively come together in West Ukraine. The new German chief diplomat shows solidarity.

Foreign Minister Johann WadePhul sees a strong signal to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in parallel to the Moscow military parade in the meeting in Ukraine in parallel with the Moscow military parade. “We show here that Europe is on the side of Ukraine and remind you that the Nazi regime was also significantly defeated by Ukrainian soldiers,” said the CDU politician at an informal EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting in the West Ukrainian city of Lwiw (Lemberg).

WadePhul announced that Germany would make an additional 40 million euros available to Ukraine in humanitarian aid.

The round is aware that many other peoples of Russia, the then Soviet Union, were involved in the victory over the Nazis, said WadePhul. “But we do not allow this memory day, which have every authorization, but use the war against Ukraine today. That would be a traffic that would not do justice to Ukraine, or Europe’s history as a whole.”

After WadePhul had visited a rehabilitation center for seriously injured soldiers and a cemetery with his colleagues, the minister was shaken. It has become clear that “a completely senseless war is being waged here that he demands victims every day”. This shows how urgently it is necessary to do everything to end this war. He feels a spirit of solidarity with Ukraine among the EU colleagues: “We are together.”

WadePhul welcomed the use of US President Donald Trump for a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine as a first step to a peace solution. According to the “very positive, constructive” phone call between Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Trump the day before, the federal government wanted to continue to keep the United States in the peace process. In the evening he will also talk to his US colleague Marco Rubio. WadePhul wants to meet Rubio personally as soon as possible.
