President Donald Trump’s administration is considering appointing a senior Treasury Department official as its new ambassador, according to a media report
to be appointed in Germany.

John Hurley, Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Crimes, is in talks with the White House about high-ranking ambassadorial positions, including envoy to Berlin, the Financial Times reported on Friday evening, citing three senior US officials.

This would fill an important diplomatic post that has been vacant for more than a year. Hurley has been in discussions with the White House in recent days about his next role, it said. He will remain in his role in the Ministry of Finance until further talks next week.

In a post on his network Truth Social, the 79-year-old wrote: “Viktor Orbán is a true friend, fighter and WINNER and has my full support for re-election as Prime Minister of Hungary.” In capital letters he added: “HE WILL NEVER FAIL THE GREAT PEOPLE OF HUNGARY.”

Trump further stated that relations between Hungary and the United States “have reached new heights of cooperation and spectacular successes.” This is mainly thanks to Prime Minister Orbán. “I was proud to support Viktor for re-election in 2022 and it is an honor to do so again,” Trump said.

On April 12th, the people of Hungary will elect a new parliament. Prime Minister Orbán has ruled the country with his Fidesz party since 2010 and is aiming for another term in office. However, current polls see Péter Magyar and his Tisza party ahead. This means that a change of power is considered possible for the first time in 16 years.
