Trump exposes almost all punitive tariffs against Mexico

Donald Trump relies on tariffs in economic policy. But now he has exempted Mexico again.

US President Donald Trump has suspended almost all punitive tariffs against Mexico. The incumbent announced this in a contribution on his Truth Social platform. He did this “as a courtesy and out of respect” to the Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, writes Trump.

Only since this week, punitive tariffs of 25 percent have been on goods from Mexico and Canada, which should actually come into force in early February. Trump then suspended this for a month. Now he makes an exception again: all imports from the southern neighboring country, which are covered by the USMCA free trade agreement from 2020, are freed from the tariffs by April 2, said the US President.

Previously, the US trade minister Howard Lutnick had already indicated that Canada could also be excluded from the tariffs.

The USMCA agreement is a free trade agreement between the USA, Mexico and Canada. The contract replaced the previously applicable NAFTA agreement and made the region one of the largest free trade zones in the world. The goods covered by USMCA include agricultural products, dairy products, cars, industrial products and digital trade. In addition, the agreement regulates working conditions such as strengthening unions in Mexico.
