From this afternoon onwards, the weapons in Ukraine and Russia will briefly fall silent. However, before the planned Easter ceasefire there are drone attacks on both sides.

Ahead of the announced ceasefire for Orthodox Easter, Russia and Ukraine continued their drone attacks. According to Ukrainian authorities, at least two people were killed in Odessa on the Black Sea. The public prosecutor said the dead were a 38-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man. The city administration said there were also injuries and damage to numerous residential buildings and a kindergarten.

The city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine reported at least 17 injuries as well as damage to residential buildings, a kindergarten and numerous cars following Russian attacks. Ukrainian air defense reported a total of 160 Russian drone attacks.

The Russian Defense Ministry said this morning that 99 Ukrainian drones had been shot down. The ministry did not provide any information about hits or damage.

Authorities in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar said that debris from a downed drone had sparked a fire on the site of an oil industry facility in the city of Krymsk. The fire had been extinguished, it was said. With these counterattacks on Russian energy facilities, Ukraine wants to damage Moscow’s war economy.

A 32-hour ceasefire is scheduled to begin in Ukraine and Russia at 4 p.m. (3 p.m. CEST) this afternoon. Russian President Vladimir Putin is in his fifth year of waging a war of aggression against Ukraine. According to his own statements, he set the ceasefire until midnight on Sunday so that Ukrainians and Russians could celebrate Orthodox Easter in peace. The Kremlin spoke of a humanitarian gesture.

Ukraine, which has long called for an Easter ceasefire, agreed. During a ceasefire at Easter last year, which was also ordered by Putin, both warring parties reported numerous violations. This time too, Moscow and Kiev have announced that they will respond to enemy attacks.
