The US government is expanding its steel and aluminum tariffs to hundreds of other shopping categories. The US trade ministry said on Tuesday to 407 additional products. Among other things, wind turbines and their components, mobile cranes, bulldozer, railway wagons, pumps and furniture are affected. According to an announcement in the US Federal Gazette (Federal Register), the regulation came into force on Monday. Customs refers to the steel and aluminum proportion of the so-called derivative products.
The measure is part of President Donald Trump’s protectionist trade policy. This announced in May to double the flat -rate customs set to steel and aluminum to 50 percent in order to support the domestic manufacturers. Trump has fundamentally changed world trade due to the imposition of significantly higher tariffs to almost all exports to the USA and tariffs on goods to certain sectors. The extension now has been based on a 1962 law, which allows measures for national security reasons. Trump argues that the tariffs will lead to an expansion of domestic production.
