According to the statement made by STM, which has signed projects and domestic products in the field of cyber security in Türkiye, STM Technological Thought Center “Thinktech” announced the new Cyber Threat Report, which includes the months of January 2025.
In order to raise awareness in the field of cyber security, STM’s report prepared by Cyber Security Experts has 7 different topics.
The report includes the largest crypto currency theft “Bybit Hack Case” in history, the effect of human factor on cyber security, and recently current and interesting topics such as the most cyber attacks countries.
In February 2025, the crypto world was shaken by a cyber attack on Bybit, one of the leading stock exchanges based in Dubai. This attack, approximately 400 thousand Ethereum token (about $ 1.5 billion worth) stolen as the largest crypto money theft in history recorded.
On February 21, 2025, Bybit found that a security vulnerability was abused during a transfer of hot wallets (offline storage), a routine process on the platform. The attackers manipulated this process and directed the funds to their addresses.
North Korean Hackers $ 5 billion crypto emphasis
Following the attack, FBI’s investigation, the attack was carried out by the famous North Korean Hacker Group Lazarus.
The stolen Ethereums were transformed into Bitcoin and other digital assets to conceal the source of the funds and distributed to thousands of different Blokzincir.
Lazarus came up with actions such as Sony Pictures attack and SWIFT attacks on various banks in previous years. According to Trm Labs, a Blokzincir intelligence company, North Korean hackers have stole more than $ 5 billion crypto money since 2017.
The report included what needs to be done against these attacks. Accordingly, experts emphasize that the wallets requiring multiple signatures, regular security inspections and trainings to increase user awareness should be expanded. At the same time, it is recommended to develop new protocols to make the use of cold wallets safer and tighten their systems.
Pay attention to the human factor in cyber attacks
Unconscious or incorrect behaviors of the human factor, which is considered the weakest link of the cyber security chain, are actively used by attackers to overcome the security mechanisms. In the STM report, he pointed out that most of the cyber threats are caused by human mistakes and emphasized the following measures:
“Strong and unique passwords should be used, these passwords should be changed regularly. Vulanting with multi -factor identity (MFA) should be activated. Regular trainings should be given to employees against identity hunting attacks. Uncontrolled use of USB and portable media should be prevented. Employees should be tested by attack simulations.”
Most cyber attacks from the USA and the Netherlands
The data obtained by STM’s own HoneyPot Sensors (Honey Cube-Couzak Servers) have also demonstrated countries with the most cyber attacks worldwide.
During the months of January-February-March 2025, the most cyber attacks were from the US with 26 percent, while the Netherlands took second place with 15 percent. These countries were followed by India, China, Taiwan, France, Japan, England, UAE and Kenya, respectively.
