Google’s new application “AI OverView” was launched in the United States. The application of the application with the content of the news sites, the feature of preparing text, due to internet traffic for a while with Google that causes the reaction of the internet media. While the US media organizations accuse Google of using their news content without permission, the focus of discussions is the new copyright law with Google. We asked Oktay Çomak, the founder of “Seoart”, the “AI OverView” application and the possible problems he would create.

How does Google’s “AI OverView” feature work?

What Google calls “AI Overview ı is actually a artificial intelligence -backed summary box that sets up on the top of the search results. When the user searches for something, Google no longer lists the classic links, instead of the answer to that interrogation itself. These answers are from the web pages scanned, the data in which the artificial intelligence model is trained and the previous user behavior. But here is the critical point: These answers may be taken from your site, but it may not show you as a source. So he uses his content, but he doesn’t give traffic. For SEOs, we can call it a nightmare scenario. As this system becomes widespread, content producers, especially news sites, will face a serious traffic loss and income contraction.. Google usually works with the logic of Featured Snippet to create this summary, but in some cases it acts as if it is completely written. The accuracy is controversial. Especially in countries where linguistic nuances such as Türkiye are important, AI OverView can sometimes give funny and sometimes misleading results.

Seoart founder Oktay Çomak told Google’s AI Overview app.

AI -oriented search engines are said to seize 10 percent of traditional resources. What is the situation right now?

The rate of10 percent is actually correct, but the update is important. In developed markets such as the United States, AI -oriented vehicles such as chatgpt hold 80 percent of artificial intelligence -supported search traffic. For example, according to Similarweb data, Chatgpt has 80 percent and Google’s AI layer has only 5-6 percent market share. However, when the market is 80 percent as a share ”, it does not mean that it is completely 80 percent of the search traffic. It is true that AI -based search engines have a certain momentum in the sector; They have become a strong alternative especially in some niche user segments. However, this “10 percent share usually applies only in the AI segment.. When we look at the entire search market, traditional search engines still have a huge weight.

While discussions about the Digital Copyright Law, this issue came up. How to follow Google?

As Türkiye, we need to evaluate the issue not only technological but also from a legal and cultural framework. The Digital Copyright Law, prepared by the Parliamentary Digital Casuals Commission, is an important step on behalf of the sector. Mr. Hüseyin Yayman, the President of the Commission, is very close to the subject and wants to complete it before the end of the new legislative year. In the face of Türkiye’s determination, Google has to take a positive attitude in this process. As in Europe, he declared that he was open to negotiations in Türkiye, that is, ready to sit at the table. This is a good start.

Content can be used without permission! Artificial Intelligence handed 'News' - Picture: 2
New artificial intelligence application can use content without permission.

What kind of framework has been formed in the world?

However, the main issue here is not just sitting at the table, but what kind of frame we will sit in.
My suggestion is this: First of all, the legal infrastructure should be completed. The substances that require digital copyright payment should be added to the current FSEK. In this regard, we should consider the EU, Canada and Australian examples. There are payments made to more than 300 publishers in Europe. A similar mechanism should be created for content producers in Türkiye. Publishers in Türkiye must be a equivalent of these content production on the side that produces more than Europe. Fast and effective criminal arrangements against unfair competition such as use without permission, copy publications should be included in the law. Technology should be integrated into this process.
