The weapons are once again at rest between Pakistan and Afghanistan. A ceasefire was broken on Friday and Qatar is now mediating.

According to the mediating state of Qatar, Afghanistan and Pakistan have once again agreed on a ceasefire. Both sides had agreed to “an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to consolidate lasting peace and stability between the two countries,” said the Qatari Foreign Ministry on Sunday night. Pakistan ended a two-day ceasefire between the two countries on Friday with air strikes on targets in Afghanistan.

Before the agreement announced by Qatar, the spokesman for the radical Islamic Taliban ruling Afghanistan, Sabihullah Mujahid, confirmed the talks on the online service X on Saturday. The Afghan Prime Minister Hassan Achund had previously informed the Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a telephone call about the start of the talks. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also spoke to Anwar, who appears to be acting as a mediator between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to information from Kabul, at least ten people were killed in the Pakistani attack on Afghan territory on Friday. According to the Taliban, three places in Paktika province were bombed. The Taliban announced “retaliation”.

There was talk in Pakistani security circles of “precise air strikes” that were directed against a Taliban group that is accused of involvement in an attack in Pakistan. According to Pakistani information, the Hafiz Gul Badahur group that was attacked is linked to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to the government in Islamabad, the group was involved in a suicide attack in the northern Pakistani border region of North Waziristan in which seven Pakistani security forces were killed.

With the attack, Pakistan ended a ceasefire that began on Wednesday evening. This initially ended days of military clashes between the two states with dozens of deaths.

Since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, there have been repeated skirmishes between units from the two neighboring countries. Pakistan has long accused Afghanistan of providing protection to militias that carry out attacks in Pakistan. The Taliban government in Kabul denies this.
