A majority of the Federal Court voted for this: Brazil’s ex-President Bolsonaro was because of a state pension

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been convicted of an attempted coup d’état. A majority of four judges at the Supreme Court in Brazil owed Bolsonaro to a historical judgment on Thursday.

The 70-year-old threatens up to 43 years in prison. Due to his age and health problems after an assassination attempt, a house arrest would also be considered. Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since the beginning of August for violations of conditions and is monitored for the risk of escape.

However, the judges can change their decision until the expected verdict this Friday. If it stays with a majority, Bolsonaro would be the first President of Brazil to be convicted of attempted coup dialing after his tenure.

Bolsonaro is said to have planned a coup attempt against the government of his left successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva together with the military and allies. According to the indictment, he planned to impose a state of emergency and set new elections – however, he was unable to support the support of military management.

On January 8, 2023, followers Bolsonaros stormed the congress, the Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace shortly after Lula took office. In addition, Bolsonaro is said to have known about murder plans against Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and judge Alexandre de Moraes.

The process is led before the Supreme Court – there is no higher instance. However, limited appeals are possible within the STF, for example in the event of formal ambiguities or non -unanimous judgments. In the event of at least two different voices, a review of individual disputes could be requested again in the plenary.

Defense rejected all allegations during the procedure and argued that there was no valid evidence of Bolsonaro’s participation in a oversight plan. In addition, his lawyers spoke of a “political process” in which her client had no fair chance. They referred to the Supreme Richter de Moraes, who played a central role in the investigation and was mentioned as a suspected goal of the coup plans. For Bolsonaro’s supporters, a “pre -judgment” by the court was inevitable.

In addition to Bolsonaro, former cabinet members and high-ranking military, including ex-defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, former marine lawyer Almir Garnier and Bolsonaros of then security consultant Augusto Heleno. You will be charged up to five crimes – including attempted coupons, participation in armed criminal association and damage of listed goods.
