Russia and China recently provoked in the East China Sea and the Western Pacific. Now the USA and Japan are reacting with a show of force.

US nuclear-capable bombers flew alongside Japanese warplanes over the Sea of Japan on Wednesday. The Japanese Defense Ministry said on Thursday that it was a show of strength following Chinese and Russian military exercises in the region.

Japan and the United States reiterated their determination to prevent any unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force. In addition, the operational readiness of the armed forces of both countries was confirmed. The flight involved two US B-52 bombers as well as three Japanese F-35 stealth jets and three F-15 fighter jets.

The maneuver was preceded by several military actions by China and Russia. On Tuesday, Chinese and Russian strategic bombers flew together over the East China Sea and the Western Pacific. The Chinese Navy also held an exercise with an aircraft carrier in which Japanese jets were detected by radar beams, according to information from Tokyo. According to the Taiwanese Defense Ministry, Chinese J-16 fighter jets and H-6 bombers also completed long-range training in the western Pacific south of Taiwan late Wednesday evening.

South Korea also deployed fighter jets as Chinese and Russian planes entered its air defense identification zone. Washington criticized the radar incident as not conducive to peace and stability in the region.

China considers democratically ruled Taiwan a breakaway province and does not rule out violent conquest. The island is only a good 100 kilometers from Japanese territory. China rejected Tokyo’s accusation and said the Japanese jets had endangered the flight operations of its aircraft carrier. US troops are stationed in both Japan and South Korea
