In order to put pressure on the EU, Belarus is increasingly smuggling migrants to Poland. This time Minsk is relying on a new tactic – and is apparently getting support from terrorist groups.
Russia is apparently again smuggling migrants into Poland via its neighboring allied country Belarus. This is reported by the British media “The Telegraph”, citing Polish officials. Accordingly, this time Belarus is using tunnels that lead from its own territory to Poland and thus to the European Union (EU).
According to “The Telegraph”, the country under ruler Alexander Lukashenko also used specialists from the Middle East who are said to have designed the tunnels. According to the report, experts suspect that these could be Kurdish fighters, the Islamic State and Iranian-backed groups such as Hezbollah.
“Officials from the Podlaskie border guard agency discovered a total of four tunnels under the border with Belarus in 2025,” Lieutenant Colonel Katarzyna Zdanowicz from the Polish border guard agency told the medium. “Physical and electronic security measures at the border, such as thermal imaging cameras and detection systems, allow us to respond immediately to any attempt to violate the state border, even if it occurs underground,” she added.
It was only in mid-December that Polish authorities discovered one of the largest tunnels near the village of Narewka in eastern Poland. According to the information, about 50 meters of the tunnel ran on the Belarusian side of the border and ten meters on the Polish side. The tunnel was used by a total of 180 migrants, mainly from Afghanistan and Pakistan. Most of them were arrested when they left the tunnel on the Polish side, the Polish side said.
