The United States is shaken by attacks on two Minnesota MPs. The head of state has now also said.
US President Donald Trump has given a first statement on the murder attack on Democratic MP Melissa Hortman and the attempted murder attack on her party colleague John Hoffman in Minnesota.
“I was informed about the terrible attack in Minnesota, which seems to have been directed against MPs of the state”Trump is quoted in a message spread by government spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt. “Our Minister of Justice Pam Bondi and the FBI examine the situation and will pursue everyone involved with the full hardness of the law. Such terrible violence is not tolerated in the United States. God protect the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place.”
Hortman and her husband were killed in two politically motivated attacks and Hoffmann and his wife were injured. The perpetrator is still on the run (you can read more about this here).
Previously, Minnesota’s governor Tim Walz had already commented on the acts at a press conference. “An unspeakable tragedy occurred in Minnesota”said Walz. “My good friend and colleague Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark have become the victim of a apparently politically motivated murder attack.”
Walz, who had run for the office of Vice President in the presidential election last November, visibly moved after the crime: “A conciliatory political debate is the foundation of our democracy. We do not solve our conflicts with gun violence.”
The long -time spokeswoman for the Democrats in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, wrote at X: Her husband Paul and you are herself “Integricting whether the targeted attacks on the houses of Senator Hoffmann, spokeswoman Hortmann and her husband.” The deeds are “A shocking and hideous manifestation of political violence in our country.”
In memory of the attack on her husband Paul, who was seriously injured in October 2022 by a politically motivated burglar with a hammer, Pelosi continued: “Unfortunately, we had to experience ourselves what could happen if political violence penetrates its own four walls. We all have to remember that it is not only the act of violence itself, but also the reaction to which such actions can normalize. This climate of politically motivated violence must end.”
