In the middle of the night, Josh Shapiro and his family are awakened by the police – it is burning. Now a 38-year-old is in custody. He is said to have deliberately laid the fire.
After a night fire in the residence of the governor of Pennsylvania, the police arrested a suspect. “I am pleased to be able to tell you that we have a person in custody,” said a representative of the responsible authority at a press conference. It is a 38-year-old man from the area.
The democratic governor Josh Shapiro and his family claimed to be awakened by police officers around two in the morning (local time). “Thank God nobody was injured and the fire was deleted,” wrote Shapiro shortly afterwards at X.
The police had previously announced that they were out of arson. The public prosecutor’s office has now announced that he was trying to strive for serious arson for serious arson, murder and terrorism. The Federal Police FBI is also involved – it is currently being examined whether an indictment at federal level is also being charged.
At first, the investigators did not comment on a possible motif. The investigations continued, it said. It is a “large and complex crime scene” – the situation is serious, as the condition of the building shows.
“This kind of violence is far too common in our society,” said Shapiro at the press conference. He didn’t care who like this and what justification was directed – violence is unacceptable. He does not let himself be shaken in his work as a governor or in his faith. A few hours before the fire, Shapiro, who is a Jewish faith, had posted a photo of the festively laid table of his family on X and wished for a happy pesser’s festival.
The Democrat was temporarily undertaken last year as the possible vice presidential candidate of his party alongside Kamala Harris. The decision ultimately fell on Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota. Harris was defeated by Republican Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, who has been in office again since January 20.
In the 2022 governor election, the 51-year-old Shapiro had clearly prevailed against the Republican Doug Mastriano supported by Trump-a success that earned him great recognition within the democratic party.
