Annalena Baerbock is suddenly sitting with Jon Stewart – and promoting diplomacy on a US satire show. The appearance causes amazement online, but also discussions.

Annalena Baerbock appeared on Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” on Monday and promoted diplomacy there. The President of the UN General Assembly warned that no one could win “if we do not return to diplomatic relations.”

The “Daily Show” is one of the best-known late-night formats in the USA. Presenter Jon Stewart is considered one of the country’s most influential political satirists.

The former foreign minister used the unusual appearance to promote the United Nations. For her it is “crystal clear” that the UN Charter is “life insurance for everyone”.

At the same time, Baerbock made it clear how difficult international cooperation has become. Her task is similar to a large family gathering: “Imagine bringing your family together around the table for Thanksgiving – and you have a cranky uncle, your hippie mother, and then they all have to sing from the same songbook together.”

The interview also discussed specific conflicts. Baerbock referred to blockages in the UN Security Council, for example during votes on the Strait of Hormuz. Vetoes by individual states contributed to the inability to resolve conflicts.

In response, there are efforts to shift important issues more to the General Assembly, “where all 193 member states are represented.”

At the same time, she emphasized the growing importance of diplomatic solutions. In a changing world order, it will become more difficult – but also more necessary – to negotiate with one another.

She used a humorous moment to point out the debate about power relations: “Frankly: In history, it was rarely women who had the atomic bomb.”

The fact that Baerbock appeared in a US satire show caused numerous reactions online. Comments under a YouTube excerpt read something like: “I never thought I’d see the day I’d see Annalena on a Jon Stewart show. My goodness, how awesome.”

Another user writes: “The strangest German crossover since John Oliver had Bernd Bread on his show.”
