Bad Weather can ruin your vacation. The room broker Airbnb now offers travelers who are sensitive to rain additional insurance for a fee, with which they can protect themselves against rainy days. “Airbnb weather protection” is the name of the new offer behind the American insurer Chubb stuck.
The basic principle is quickly explained: If it rains during the trip at the location of the booked apartment or room, the insurance pays a sum of between 50 and 1,000 euros per day, depending on the contract. Completion is possible no later than seven days before check-in for confirmed stays of less than 30 days.
However, “weather protection” is not possible for all holiday destinations. The booking must meet “the relevant requirements,” writes Airbnb on its website. Only then will travelers be offered additional insurance cover. What exactly these requirements look like remains unclear. The protection applies to travel both in Germany and abroad. Travel to the USA and other areas are excluded.
How much it must rain
- Rain insurance: When it rains, the cash register rings
In addition, the insurance cover only applies in the event of rain. Other precipitation, such as snow or sleet, is excluded.
“Weather protection” is what is known as parametric insurance. This means: The insurance company independently evaluates the weather data. Before the first payment, insured persons must provide their bank details and, if necessary, confirm their identity. If the appropriate rainfall amounts are reached, the payments are made automatically.
Several providers in Germany
Weather insurance is not completely new in this country. Several providers have similar products on the market, some of which have broader protection or are linked to lower requirements. In principle, however, travelers should ask themselves whether the corresponding protection is really necessary for them before taking out such insurance.
