US President Donald Trump announced a party congress of his Republican party for the intermediate elections in 2026. Party days at the national level are usually only organized in the United States in the years in which the president is also elected. Presidential elections take place every four years in the United States, while congress elections every two years.
“The Republican Party urgently desires a party congress for the intermediate elections in 2026,” Trump wrote on Friday on his online platform Truth Social. “We will hold you at the highest level. It will be both entertaining and very productive.”
With the step, the Republicans apparently want to secure their narrow majority in the congress. A loss would make it difficult for Trump to implement his legislative proposals. Republicans currently hold 53 of the 100 seats in the Senate and have a majority of 219 to 213 votes in the House of Representatives. According to the Axios news portal, the Democrats are also considering a party congress in front of the interim elections.
California governor Gavin Newsom fears that incumbent Donald Trump will no longer allow free and fair coordination. “In my eyes, there is no doubt that he does not want to have any further choice,” Newsom told the “Sydney Morning Herald” in an interview. “If it does, it will be a choice in the style (the Russian President Vladimir) Putin: the pretense of a choice, but not fair, not open. I am absolutely convinced of that.”
Newsom certified Trump “extraordinary efficiency” in what he does. “It is surgical. The realization of a vision.” In the heated mood after the fatal assassination attempt on the right US activist Charlie Kirk, Trump and his faithful would also pour oil into the fire with their “revenge-touser” rhetoric. That should “chase a cold shower for everyone,” said Newsom of the Australian newspaper. “I am deeply concerned about the coming weeks and months. This is a hellish moment for our country.”
