Paris has been ready to recognize Palestine as a state for a long time. Now the president has made a decision.
According to his President Emmanuel Macron Palestine, France will recognize Palestine as a state. “I will ceremoniously announce this in September this year before the United Nations General Assembly,” said Macron on platform X. “Peace is possible,” he continued. It is up to the French to show this together with the Israelis, the Palestinians, the European and international partners.
In his post, Macron emphasized that it was urgently necessary to end the war in the Gaza Strip and to help the civilian population. In addition, the demilitarization of Hamas must be secured. Macron wrote that the liability of a state of Palestine had to be secured. “There is no alternative”, it is fatally highlighted in the contribution.
The French President shared a letter to the Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas in his post. In view of the promises that Abbas had made to him, he informed him of his determination for further action, Macron wrote.
The letter states that Abbas has confirmed Macron that the Palestinian autonomy authority also wanted to perform sovereign tasks in the Gaza strip controlled by Hamas and to make profound reforms. In addition, the Palestinian President had spoken in favor of holding elections in the coming year. The future Palestinian state should therefore not be militarized, according to the letter. Furthermore, Abbas is said to have spoken out for a disarmament of Hamas, condemned the terrorist attack of October 7, 2023 and asked for the immediate release of the hostages recorded by Hamas. The attack by Hamas and other Islamist extremists on Israel on October 7, 2023 was the trigger of the Gaza War.
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, condemned Macron’s announcement sharply. “Such a step is rewarded terror,” said a statement by Netanyahu’s office. In addition, this risk the creation of an Iranian deputy state as the Gaza Strip under the Hamas. “A Palestinian state under these conditions would be a starting ramp to annihilate Israel.”
Israel’s ex-Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described the step as “moral collapse”. “This shameful decision will be thrown into the trash can of history,” he said. The recognition of a Palestinian state after the massacre of October 7 gave Islamist terrorists the signal: “Kill Jews, and the world will give you a state,” said Bennett.
The French President had previously promised the will to recognize Palestine as a state. He originally mentioned the UN Conference on the two-state solution in New York as a possible time for the announcement of the decision; The conference was postponed from June to the end of this month. Macron had also said that he was also trying to recognize Propalestinian states Israel and could be “mutual recognition” by several countries at the conference.
Most recently, Norway and the two EU countries Ireland and Spain announced that they recognize Palestine as a separate state. Almost 150 UN member states already do this. Important western countries are not part of it, including the UN veto power of the USA and Great Britain. Palestine does not recognize Germany as a state either. Israel is not recognized by Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria.
Macron was repeatedly concerned about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and criticized Israel’s approach in the sealed coastal area. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Wednesday in the Gaza Strip of a fatal hunger crisis.
As the German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said after Macron’s visit to Berlin on Wednesday, Macron, together with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), appealed to the Israeli government to “initiate an armistice immediately and take humanitarian measures in close proximity”. France recently signed the appeal of 28 countries to terminate the Gaza War, which Germany did not join.
