A serious accident has occurred at one of Canada’s most used military bases. There are dead and injured people, and a fire appears to have gotten out of control.
People were killed and injured in a serious incident at a Canadian military base in the province of Alberta. Defense Minister David McGuinty announced this on Saturday in Ottawa. However, he did not give an exact number of casualties or provide any information about the cause of the “tragic” situation at the Wainwright base, about 210 kilometers east of Edmonton.
The Canadian broadcaster Global News reports, citing military sources, that at least seven people have died and there are dozens injured. According to the report, a gas pipe or a gas source on the base was hit during a shooting exercise, which led to an explosion at around 4 p.m. (local time) on Saturday. This information has not yet been officially confirmed.

Defense Minister: “I can’t remember any such event in recent times”
The incident sparked a large fire. The major fire is still raging, Defense Minister McGuinty said on Saturday evening. “I can’t recall any such event in recent memory.” He described the situation as “very tense and delicate.” The government is mobilizing all necessary resources for the operation. They are working to clarify what exactly happened at the base on Saturday, he said. Further information will follow in the coming hours and days as soon as there is reliable information, said the minister.
The Canadian military confirmed in a statement on Sunday that the fire broke out around 4 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, but did not give a cause. The fire quickly spread across the military base’s training area. The statement does not say how many victims there are.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said on social media that “many of our brave military personnel” were affected by the fire. The fire had jumped the base fence and spread to an adjacent area. However, no evacuation orders were issued. Wainwright Base is one of the busiest Army bases in Canada.
Provincial capital declares “Code Orange”.
The public broadcaster CBC reports that “Code Orange” has been declared at clinics in the provincial capital of Edmonton. This is a disaster management protocol that is intended to ensure the care of a large number of patients who are now being brought from Wainwright to Edmonton.
