Iran links opening of Hormuz to US concessions

Iran and Oman are said to be in virtual agreement in their negotiations over the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, Tehran is playing for time and is demanding that the USA fulfill advance payments first.

According to Iranian media, the National Security Council is making the reopening of the de facto blocked Strait of Hormuz subject to six conditions:

– An end to all US threats against the Islamic Republic

– A permanent cessation of the war against Iran and its allies in the region

– Lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports and withdraw US forces from the region

– Full financial compensation for war damage

– A complete lifting of all sanctions against Iran

– An unconditional release of all frozen Iranian assets

The National Security Council coordinates foreign, defense, intelligence and homeland security policy. It is the highest decision-making body in the country. However, decisions only become effective after confirmation by Supreme Leader Moschtaba Khamenei. The council, which includes many hardliners, is also reviewing the agreement reached between representatives of Iran and Oman.

According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, negotiations with Oman on new shipping routes are in their final stages. However, an agreement does not automatically lead to a reopening. This continues to depend on the fulfillment of conditions that were transmitted to the USA via intermediaries. According to Araghtschi, there are currently no direct negotiations with the US government.

However, in an interview with Fox News on Saturday, US Vice President JD Vance gave the impression that the US is a player in the talks between Iran and Oman.
