The wave of mergers among health insurance companies continues. Now two more company health insurance companies have decided to merge.
The number of health insurance companies in Germany continues to fall: The administrative boards of the two health insurance companies mkk and BKK Pfalz voted unanimously on Friday to merge their two company health insurance companies. From January 1, 2027, both want to operate together under the name mkk. However, approval from the Federal Office for Social Security is still pending.
The merger will create a health insurance company with a total of 660,000 insured people. The mkk brings around 520,000 insured people into the merger, the BKK Pfalz 140,000.

The merger will not change anything for those insured – they will automatically become members of the merged health insurance company. However, it is still unclear what additional contribution the merged fund will charge. While the mkk currently charges an additional contribution of 3.5 percent, the BKK Pfalz charges 3.9 percent. A spokeswoman for the BKK Pfalz explained when asked by t-online that a decision can most likely be expected in mid-December.
Several mergers announced
The aim of the merger is to create the conditions for remaining economically stable and making necessary investments, commented Andreas Erb, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BKK Pfalz. mkk board member Andrea Galle agreed: “The merger with BKK Pfalz strengthens us for the future.” The health system is facing profound changes in view of increasing expenditure and demographic change.
In the past few weeks, several mergers between health insurance companies have been decided. So they had two guild health insurance companies IKK Berlin Brandenburg and IKK directly healthy their merger was sealed in October of this year. BKK Firmus announced the merger in July known with two other health insurance companies.
