Death came at night. Russia has again shelled the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Many people have to die. There is no end to the conflict in sight.
For the Ukrainian capital Kyiv It was one of the hardest nights since the beginning of the war: with rockets, cruise missiles and drones Russia the city of three million people on the Dnipro River was attacked. According to the capital’s military governor, Tymur Tkachenko, at least 27 people were killed and another 91 were injured. The police had previously spoken of 100 injuries. 70 people had to be hospitalized, like the mayor Vitali Klitschko announced in the morning. Meanwhile, rescue workers are searching for survivors and other victims among the rubble of the many destroyed homes.
War enemy Russia speaks of purely military goals. The Ukraine calls for more help from the West against these types of attacks. And voices are also being raised in Europe for an answer to this blow.
The Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced retaliation for the massive attack. “We are for a just peace, a just end to the war, and as long as that doesn’t exist, for just reactions,” he told journalists at one of the impact sites in the capital.
Child in hospital, parents missing
Behind the pure statistics lie many tragic individual fates. A ten-year-old boy was also seriously injured, Klitschko said on Telegram. The boy will be operated on. “The parents were not found under the rubble,” wrote Klitschko. That’s why the grandfather is with the little patient.
The announcement is just one of many indications that the number of victims is likely to rise. Many residential buildings were damaged in the attack, some were partially destroyed and others completely destroyed. It also hit a hotel and the building of a telecommunications provider in the city center. Several internet providers reported problems.

Russian attack with the full repertoire
According to the Ukrainian air force Russia used 570 flying objects to attack its neighboring country, including almost 500 drones. In addition, the Russian military also bombarded Kiev with 24 Iskander ballistic missiles and around 50 cruise missiles of various types. These included four Zirkon-type hypersonic guided missiles, which were actually developed to combat ships.
According to its own information, the Ukrainian air defense intercepted 524 flying objects, most of which were drones.
Why is the damage so great?
The attack was expected and Zelensky had already warned his compatriots about the attack in advance. Nevertheless, the anti-aircraft defense in Kyiv was overwhelmed. The reason was the large number and variety of attacking objects. Russia overwhelmed Ukraine’s air defenses with multiple waves of attacks in which it coordinated drones, rockets and cruise missiles. Ukraine says it is relatively good at defending against drones. The rate of launches of cruise missiles is already significantly lower, and the Iskander missiles continue to cause a huge headache for Kiev.
