Iran executes men over protests in January
Two men who were said to have played a leading role in anti-government protests in January were executed in Iran on Tuesday. “The death sentences against Jawad Samani and Abolfasl Saedi, armed leaders of the January 2026 coup attempt, have been carried out,” the Iranian judiciary said on its website Misan Online on Tuesday
Accordingly, the two men were convicted of “war against God” and “corruption on earth” – both offenses carry the death penalty in Iran. Misan also reported that they destroyed public property in order to oppose the “system of the Islamic Republic.”
The number of executions in Iran has recently increased. Among those convicted are many people whom the judiciary accused of taking part in the anti-government protests at the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026. Iranian authorities have repeatedly described the demonstrations as “unrest instigated by foreign countries,” particularly by Israel and the United States, whose airstrikes on February 28 sparked the Iran War. According to the UN on Monday, the Iranian judiciary has executed at least 40 people since the beginning of the year, including 18 demonstrators.
Iranian ships are probably heading for domestic ports
Despite a naval blockade by the USA, three Iranian tankers and two cargo ships are heading for Iran, according to a media report. The ships with essential goods on board are on their way from the Indian Ocean to ports in the south of the country, reports Iranian state television. The US military said in a security advisory on Monday that a blockade of Iranian ports would remain in effect until Friday.
Trump criticizes Israeli attacks on Beirut and warns Netanyahu
US President Donald Trump has criticized the Israeli attacks on the Lebanese capital Beirut. He made it clear to Israel that he didn’t like it, Trump said on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must act more responsibly with regard to Lebanon. If Israel can’t do its job without killing everyone else, Syria should take care of the Hezbollah militia, Trump said. He suggested this to Israel. Asked if he was frustrated with Netanyahu, Trump replied: “No, we have a great relationship.”
The US President has now described Iran as having “rational leadership”.
