Macron wants rapid demining in the Strait of Hormuz
Following the framework agreement between the USA and Iran, French President Emmanuel Macron is relying on a quick start to an international military mission in the Strait of Hormuz. “We will first do everything we can to ensure that this agreement comes into force and that the Strait of Hormuz is peacefully reopened and shipping traffic can resume,” Macron told broadcaster TF1. “We are prepared to act very quickly.”
France could deploy its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, frigates, minesweepers and aircraft to the region “within the next two to three days of confirmation,” Macron said. “We will therefore work together with the Americans and, at the same time, with the Iranians, to ensure that this operation takes place so that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is peaceful and long-lasting.”
A neutral naval mission, led by France and Great Britain, has been in preparation for some time and is scheduled to begin after the end of hostilities. The aim is to clear mines in the strait and accompany merchant ships for safe passage. More than 40 countries have pledged their support, including Germany. With a view to possible deployment in the Strait, France had already moved the “Charles de Gaulle” and escort ships near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran: Lebanon is an integral part of an agreement
Iran views Lebanon as an integral part of a deal with the US to end the war. Lebanon is mentioned three times in the draft memorandum, said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. It calls for an end to the war on all fronts and respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Concerning the manner and mechanism of signing the memorandum, a final decision will be made today and tomorrow, the results of which will be officially announced.” Before the signing of the agreement planned for Friday, diplomatic visits to the countries in the region are also on Iran’s agenda.
