US President Donald Trump is celebrating his 80th birthday. Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is also among the well-wishers. What did they talk about on the phone?
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated his American colleague Donald Trump on his 80th birthday in a telephone conversation. Trump once again called for a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, reported the Russian state news agency Tass, citing the Kremlin’s foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov. The Iran war and bilateral relations were also discussed in the conversation.
Kremlin sees Ukrainian attacks as an obstacle
According to the foreign policy adviser, Putin said that recent Ukrainian attacks on “civilian objects on Russian territory” made a peace settlement difficult. “That was highlighted,” Ushakov said. However, the Kremlin chief said that these attacks would not change Ukraine’s “position on the battlefield.” If Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj wants to talk to Putin, he can still come to Moscow.
According to Ushakov, the “extremely friendly” conversation lasted 55 minutes. At the same time, Moscow also sent a letter of congratulations to Washington. It was the 13th phone call between the two since Trump took office in January 2025.
Russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine since 2022. Washington has been urging both sides to reach a peace agreement for months.
