European Union (EU) Commission Spokesperson Eva Hrncirova said that EU countries spent 47 billion euros more on imports of energy products in the last 100 days due to the US/Israel-Iran War.
At the press conference held in Brussels, Hrncirova made statements about the effects of the 100-day conflict in the Middle East on the energy field.
“Our fossil fuel import bill has increased by over 47 billion euros in the last 100 days.” Hrncirova said, explaining that although the amount of energy purchased remained the same, a high price was paid.
Hrncirova stated that despite the events in the Middle East, the EU did not experience any disruption in energy supply and supply security was ensured.
Stating that they diversified energy supply, increased the share of renewable resources in energy and increased efficiency, Hrncirova said, “Of course, we are experiencing a price shock. This is a result.” he said.
Hrncirova emphasized that they constantly monitor the energy supply, increase coordination between member countries and relevant units, and are ready to take further measures if necessary.
Stating that they may encounter some difficulties in the coming weeks and months if the conflicts in Hormuz prolong, Hrncirova stated that they provide guidance to citizens and companies on the necessary measures and continue to fulfill their main duty, the coordination role.
Hrncirova added that EU oil and natural gas coordination groups will meet soon and evaluate the situation and the reaction of the markets.
