The number of cinema audiences in Türkiye was recorded as 27 million 657 thousand 591 people last year, with a 15 percent decrease compared to the previous year.
Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) published the “Cinema and Performing Arts Statistics” bulletin for 2025.
According to the data of the General Directorate of Cinema, a total of 771 films were shown in movie theaters last year, 417 of which were for the first time. Of the 417 films released for the first time, 159 were domestic and 258 were foreign films. During this period, the number of cinema halls was determined as 2 thousand 161, and the number of seats in these halls was determined as 253 thousand 364.
The number of cinema audiences was recorded as 27 million 657 thousand 591 people, with a 15 percent decrease compared to the previous year. The number of domestic film audiences decreased by 18.3 percent to 15 million 96 thousand 336, and the number of foreign film audiences decreased by 10.7 percent to 12 million 561 thousand 255.
THE NUMBER OF SHOWS OF CHILDREN’S WORKS INCREASED
The number of theater halls was 1101 as of the 2024-2025 season, while the number of seats in these halls was determined as 494 thousand 184.
The number of works performed by state theaters in the said season was 6 thousand 667. During this period, a total of 237 works were performed, 99 of which were copyrighted and 138 of which were translations. In the said season, the number of adult plays performed by state theaters was 5 thousand 55, while the number of children’s plays was recorded as 1612. The number of spectators of state theaters this season was 1 million 951 thousand 41.
The number of theater spectators was recorded as 8 million 183 thousand 257 in the same period. The number of plays performed in theater halls increased by 4.8 percent compared to the previous season, reaching 10 thousand 216. The number of spectators of translated works in the theater increased by 14 percent to 2 million 459 thousand 735, and the number of spectators of copyrighted works decreased by 2.9 percent compared to the last season, reaching 5 million 723 thousand 522.
While the number of children’s shows performed in these halls increased by 5.5 percent compared to the previous season, reaching 13 thousand 156, the number of adult plays decreased by 5.7 percent to 21 thousand 619. The number of audiences for children’s plays increased by 5.3 percent and the number of audiences for adult plays increased by 0.1 percent in the same period.
Opera and ballet shows affiliated with the General Directorate of State Opera and Ballet were held in 6 provinces throughout Türkiye in the 2024-2025 season. The number of opera and ballet audiences increased by 16.5 percent compared to the previous season, reaching 511 thousand 376, while the number of performances increased by 21.8 percent.
6 orchestras, 11 choirs and 11 communities affiliated with the General Directorate of Fine Arts operated during the period in question. The number of spectators in the activities of orchestras, choirs and ensembles decreased by 11 percent compared to the previous season, reaching 436 thousand 227. While the number of orchestra audience decreased by 15.3 percent compared to the previous season, the number of choir audience increased by 27.6 percent. In the same period, the number of community spectators was recorded as 142 thousand 766, with a decrease of 25.5 percent.
