Difficult access to Green Card: US government backtracks
After a wave of public outrage, the US government has weakened its plans to restrict access to the permanent residency permit known as the green card. The US Secretary of Homeland Security announced that the new regulation, according to which the Green Card can only be applied for from abroad, will ultimately not apply to all applicants. Instead, the rule should be applied “on a case-by-case basis.”
“It merely served as a reminder to officials to exercise their discretion,” the ministry said. Officials could decide whether to require applicants to leave the U.S. to submit their application.
Last week, the responsible immigration authority USCIS stated that from now on, applicants must in most cases apply for a green card from abroad and are not allowed to already be in the USA. Exceptions should therefore only be made in “extraordinary circumstances”. The USA issues more than a million green cards every year. More than half of the applicants were already in the USA when they applied.

The crew ignored more than 20 warnings. A fighter jet then fired a missile into the ship’s engine room. The US Army provided information about possible injuries on board.
