It is actually not yet ready for use, but now a US hypersonic missile is to be deployed to the Middle East. China and Russia are already further along.

The US Central Command has apparently requested to relocate the hypersonic missile “Dark Eagle” to the Middle East. A final decision is still pending, reports the Bloomberg news agency. It would be the first use of the rocket ever.

The US was reacting to the fact that Iran had positioned some of its ballistic missile launchers beyond the range of existing US systems. However, the long-range hypersonic weapon has still not been officially declared operational, while China and Russia are already using similar weapons.

“Dark Eagle” is said to have a range of around 2,700 kilometers, which means it can hit targets far into enemy territory. The rockets fly at a speed of more than Mach 5, which corresponds to over 6,000 kilometers per hour.

The targets are primarily critical infrastructure for modern warfare such as air defense systems, command centers and missile launch sites. A rocket apparently costs $15 million and an entire battery costs $2.7 billion.
