US President Donald Trump recently publicly criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). At the same time, concerns about a possible withdrawal of US troops are growing in Europe.
Despite massive accusations from US President Donald Trump, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has renewed his criticism of the Iran war. The war had a “direct impact on our energy supply” and a “massive impact on our economic performance,” said the Chancellor on Wednesday in Berlin. “In this respect, I urge that this conflict be resolved.” The US President sharply attacked the Chancellor after his criticism of the US’s actions in the Iran war – which could mean a departure from the previously demonstratively friendly relationship between Merz and Trump. Merz emphasized on Wednesday that his personal relationship with Trump remained “still good.”
Trump declared on his online platform Truth Social on Tuesday: “German Chancellor Friedrich Merz thinks it’s okay for Iran to have nuclear weapons. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!” If Iran had nuclear weapons, it would “take the entire world hostage.” Trump emphasized: “No wonder Germany is doing so badly, both economically and in other respects!” Why Trump made the nuclear weapons accusation against Merz remained unclear, because the Chancellor has repeatedly made it clear that Iran should under no circumstances acquire the atomic bomb.
Merz said on Monday at a school event in North Rhine-Westphalia with a view to the United States that “an entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian government.” The Chancellor also said that “the Americans obviously have no strategy.” The problem with such conflicts is always: “You don’t just have to get in, you also have to get out again. We saw that very painfully in Afghanistan, for 20 years. We saw that in Iraq,” Merz continued.
California Governor Gavin Newsom made fun of US President Donald Trump and a special series of US passports with his image on the X platform. “In honor of California’s 175th anniversary, we will be introducing a very special driver’s license for every Californian this summer,” Newsom wrote in a post.
