The Ukrainian army can now launch its interceptor drones from the air. This could make them even more effective against Russian Geran drones.

Ukraine is expanding its air defense against Russian drone attacks with a new component: a converted Antonov An-28 transport aircraft is now specifically using interceptor drones to combat Russian Geran drones. This is shown by videos published by several units of the Ukrainian army.

Accordingly, the twin-engine turboprop aircraft carries several small drones developed in Ukraine under its wings. These are launched in the air and are intended to intercept incoming Russian kamikaze drones. The method is part of a rapidly evolving technological race in drone warfare between Russia and Ukraine.

The models used include the drones “P1-Sun” and “AS-3 Surveyor”. Both are designed to specifically track and destroy enemy flying objects. While the P1-Sun is comparatively simple and inexpensive, the AS-3 Surveyor has sensors for target detection and can operate either remotely or largely autonomously. Destruction occurs through direct collision or an explosive charge in the immediate vicinity of the target.

The costs play a central role: According to research by the specialist portal “The War Zone”, the price for such an interceptor drone is significantly lower than that of a Russian Geran drone, which is based on Iranian Shahed models. This would allow Ukraine to address a central problem of modern air defense – the unfavorable cost ratio between comparatively cheap offensive weapons and expensive defense systems.

Several aspects make the Antonov An-28 an ideal starting point for small interceptor drones: It can stay in the air for a long time and carry out targeted patrols in areas where drone attacks are expected. It also brings the interceptor drones closer to their target, increasing their range and reaction speed. The crew uses, among other things, infrared cameras and night vision devices, as most Russian drone attacks occur at night.
