Türkiye’s defense industry products continue to find wide coverage in international media. The technical capacity and operational flexibility of Turkish defense platforms and systems were highlighted in the analyzes of Europe-based European Security & Defense (ESD), US-based Defense News and The Defense Post. In the published analyses, the emphasis that Türkiye is “a new center in the global defense supply chain” draws attention.

Türkiye’s first indigenous 5th generation fighter aircraft, KAAN, reached a speed of 230 knots (426 km/h) and rose to an altitude of 10 thousand feet (3,048 meters) in its second test flight. (AA)

5th GENERATION CAPABILITY

According to ESD’s analysis, Türkiye’s first domestic 5th generation fighter jet KAAN reached a speed of 230 knots (426 km/h) in its second test flight on May 6, 2024. and rose to an altitude of 10 thousand feet (3,048 meters). According to the data shared by the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), the flight, which lasted 14 minutes, took place for a longer time and at a higher altitude than the first test. KAAN’s final performance targets include a maximum speed of Mach 1.8, a service ceiling of 55 thousand feet and maneuver limits of +9/-3.5 g. The aircraft is aimed to minimize radar visibility with its low radar cross-section (stealth), internal weapons carrying capacity and “supercruise” capability. The twin-engine platform currently flies with General Electric F110-GE-129 turbofan engines as propulsion.

Swarm UAV CAPABILITY WITHOUT GPS

According to Defense News The K2 kamikaze UAV system developed by Baykar demonstrated autonomous swarm UAV capability even in environments where GPS was disabled. The platform, which has a length of 5.1 meters, a wingspan of 10 meters and a maximum take-off weight of 800 kilograms, can carry 200 kilograms of ammunition. The system draws attention with its range of over 2 thousand kilometers, cruising speed of over 200 km and airborne duration of more than 13 hours. K2, which can perform day and night reconnaissance thanks to its electro-optical and infrared camera systems, can perform terminal guidance with its visual target locking feature. According to the analysis, the most striking feature of the platform is its ability to determine location with terrain-referenced visual navigation without relying on GPS. It was stated that in Baykar’s tests, five K2 platforms completed the tasks by accurately maintaining their positions relative to each other with artificial intelligence-supported swarm algorithms.

LIGHT AND FAST FIREPOWER

According to The Defense Post’s analysis article, Turkish defense company KALEKALIP will be at the Enforce Tac 2026 fair. Introduced the KMG556CL machine gun. The gun weighs 5.6 kilograms and can reach a firing rate of 900 rounds per minute. The system, with a 26.7 cm barrel, offers an exit velocity of approximately 800 m/s, while providing an effective range of 400 meters and an area target range of 600 meters. The gun, which can adapt to different missions with its 50, 100 and 200-round ribbon feeding options, draws attention with its lightness compared to other weapons in its class. The foldable stock, integrated bipod, quick-change barrel and double-sided usage features show that the weapon is optimized for special forces and mobile units.

Türkiye NEW CENTER

According to the analysis of international defense publications, the systems developed by Türkiye stand out not only with their technical capabilities but also with their cost-effective solutions. While it was emphasized in the Defense News analysis that the K2 platform offers a “low-cost but high-effective attack option”, ESD stated that the KAAN project created a new player in the European defense balance. The Defense Post evaluated the KMG556CL as “a new generation infantry concept that combines mobility and firepower.” In analysis It was stated that Türkiye’s increasing role in NATO operations and its domestic production capacity created a new center in the global defense supply chain.
