The company downplayed the impact of the incident in a statement, saying there would be no consequences to users or operations: “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-critical corporate information was accessed in connection with a third-party security breach.” A spokesperson also tried to calm the public, especially due to the intense anticipation around Grand Theft Auto VI, by saying, “This incident has no impact on our organization or our players.”
It has not been disclosed so far which files may have been leaked. Although some claims suggest that this could be corporate documents such as financial records, marketing plans or contracts, there has been no clear confirmation by Rockstar about the content.
A new shock for GTA 6 developers
This incident brings to mind the major leak in 2022. At that time, before Grand Theft Auto VI was officially introduced, early development images appeared on the internet. The perpetrator of that incident, an 18-year-old young man, was hospitalized in a hospital in the United Kingdom for security purposes. Although this time the situation is more limited than the official statement, it again places the studio at the center of a cybersecurity crisis.
The ShinyHunters name is no stranger to these types of attacks. The group has previously been linked to events affecting companies such as Microsoft, AT&T, Cisco and Ticketmaster, and often uses media pressure to extort money from its targets.
All of this is happening as Grand Theft Auto VI’s scheduled release date of November 19 approaches and its third trailer is still awaited.
