Developments in Türkiye’s defense industry continue to be in the headlines of global defense media. In the analysis published by the US-based defense publication Military Leak, it was stated that the KAAN National Combat Aircraft program developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has entered a new phase. According to the analysis, new video footage released by TAI revealed that the program has begun to transition from a single test aircraft to a fleet of multiple prototypes. Defense News, a UK-based defense publication, defined Türkiye’s National Combat Aircraft program as “one of the most important projects of Ankara’s goal of strategic independence in the defense industry.”

The testing of KAAN on three separate prototypes, P0, P1 and P2, is closely followed in the international defense media.

PROTOTYPES WILL ACCELERATE THE SCHEDULE

According to Military Leak’s analysis In the KAAN program, parallel testing activities will be carried out on three different prototypes called P0, P1 and P2. P0, the first prototype of the program, continues its tests to expand its flight time after its first 13-minute flight on February 21, 2024. The publication stated that with three different prototypes, Türkiye’s flight performance, avionics system integration and mission systems will be tested in parallel. According to defense analysis, the multiple prototype approach is considered a critical model that reduces development risk and accelerates the schedule in modern fighter aircraft programs. According to Military Leak analysis, the P1 and P2 prototypes are expected to begin test flights within the next two years.

GLOBAL MARKET IS TARGETED

Another defense publication that scrutinized the KAAN program is the UK-based Defense News defined Türkiye’s National Combat Aircraft program as “one of the most important projects of Ankara’s goal of strategic independence in the defense industry.” The US-based Breaking Defense publication also wrote that the program aims to create export potential not only for Türkiye’s own air forces but also in the global warplane market. According to the analysis, the production pace that Türkiye has achieved in the defense industry in recent years can increase the international competitiveness of the KAAN program.

IT WILL FUNCTION AS A DATA PLATFORM

KAAN is being developed within the scope of Türkiye’s fifth generation fighter aircraft program, previously known as TF-X and officially defined as the National Combat Aircraft. The aircraft was designed for modern air superiority missions with its low-visibility (stealth) fuselage design, twin-engine structure and advanced sensor fusion architecture. KAAN is approximately 21 meters long, 14 meters wingspan and 6 meters high. It is aimed for KAAN to be able to operate at an altitude of 55 thousand feet and to have the capacity to carry between 8 and 10 tons of ammunition with its internal weapon stations. The fighter jet is also designed to be able to share data simultaneously with other air, land and sea elements with its advanced mission computers, sensor fusion infrastructure and network-centric warfare capabilities.
