Right-wing activists and counter-demonstrators clash in front of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence. Suddenly an “improvised explosive device” flies. Who threw it – and why?

According to initial police findings, an “improvised explosive device” was thrown from the crowd during protests in front of the official residence of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. It could have seriously injured or killed people, but it did not explode, said New York Police Chief Jessica Tisch.

Two more suspected explosive devices were found, one in a car parked near the official residence. The explosive device that was thrown contained the highly explosive TATP, said NYPD Chief Tisch at a press conference. The incident is being investigated together with the Federal Police FBI for a connection to the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS).

According to Mamdani, the right-wing extremist activist Jake Lang called for a protest in front of the official residence of the first Muslim mayor of the metropolis. Then there were counter-protests and violent clashes broke out. According to the investigators’ initial findings, the explosive device probably came from the ranks of the counter-demonstrators.

Mamdani condemned the protest by Lang’s supporters and the violent escalation, which was fueled by “fanaticism and racism”. At least six people were arrested during the protests.
