After leaving Istanbul Airport on February 6, the team reached Antarctica after a long journey that lasted 60 hours via Brazil and Chile.
After completing his work on Horseshoe Island, the scientific delegation finished the maintenance and attitude of the Sabit Global Positioning Satellite System (GNSS) station, one of the first stations established outside the borders of Türkiye on Dismal Island.
The participants then crossed the Grandidier channel, the Strait of Penola and Le Marie from Adelaide Island with a stormy, wavy and snowy sea expedition, and first reached Deception Island and then to King George Island.
The scientific delegation had to wait for the weather conditions to return to positive on a ship called Betanzos, the Chilean Flags, which had a living space for a month as a result of no flights due to weather opposition. During the waiting period, the team spent time making the final preparations for their projects, helping and chatting in the work related to the preservation of their examples.
Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir attended the ceremony attended by the White Continent team of 20 people, first on the way back to King George Island, Chilean Punta Arenas made a flight. The delegation arrived in Istanbul after a journey of 14 thousand 700 kilometers.
The scientific team participating in the expedition at Istanbul Airport Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Rector. Dr. Hasan Mandal, officials and relatives welcomed. Returning from Antarctica, the team would have longed with relatives. Some families were also brought to pets for welcome.
Studies were carried out in 5 main headings and 19 projects
This year, the science team continued its activities within the framework of 5 main headings, which are important in national and international scientific themes under the “national polar science strategy” this year.
Within the scope of the strategy, it is aimed to have the highest level of research priorities in 2023-2035 at the general thematic and intermediate subject level and to reach the highest level of all stakeholders and public interest in the polar ecosystem.
The team, including 4 foreign researchers on Horseshoe Island, where Türkiye’s scientific research camp, has been working on the production of new Batimetry maps, the collection of data from newly established close space observation stations and the collection of data from geodesic stations, the investigation of space observations, environment, pollution and live life, meteorological measurements and aquosystems.
Minister KACIR “Studies, the scientific world gained significant data” sharing
Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, X social media account on the subject on the subject, said the scientific expedition in the White Continent was completed and made the following statements:
“Under the auspices of our Presidency, the 9th National Antarctica Science Expedition carried out by the Institute of TUBITAK MAM Polar Studies was successfully realized. Our 20-person science team, which continued its research under the challenging conditions of Antarctica for 34 days, implemented 19 different projects. Climate change, polar ecosystem, place sciences, living sciences and close space-first sciences, close-up sciences and close-up sciences. Our team also contributes to the diplomacy of science with international collaborations in the world.
“It was a full science campaign full”
9th National Antarctica Science Expedition Coordinator made statements to the AA correspondent at the airport. Dr. Burcu Ozsoy, a month full of over a month was completed as of today, said the team returned to the country, he said.
Expressing that three high school students participated in the expedition, Özsoy said, “These students were in the polar research competition opened by TUBITAK, and then they were the three high school students who won the right to come to Antarctica among the four first. They also took their degrees in Teknofest. he said.
Ozsoy, the team team is very well equipped as usual, the General Directorate of Meteorology, the Ministry of National Defense General Directorate of Map (HGM), Turkish Naval Forces Cruise, Hydrography and Occupational Department of AFAD said that the participation of AFAD.
“There is very serious melting in Antarctica”
Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy pointed out the scientific studies in Antarctica and continued his words as follows:
“In addition, we have implemented very valuable projects with our engineering studies, as well as physics, biology and chemistry foundation. Here we observe that there is a very serious melting in Antarctica and we see that the previous glacial areas have disappeared with the climate change. We will process and examine them and transform them into scientific publications and take our place in the international scientific community. “
Özsoy, the science expedition of different projects to be very valuable for themselves by noting, “Biology, earth sciences, chemistry and physics in the field of physics, established stations, whether we have obtained very valuable data.” he said.
“Our work contributes to international literature”
9. Antarctica Science Expedition Leader Dr. Hasan Hakan Yavaşoğlu stated that 19 projects were implemented within the scope of the expedition and made the following statements:
“Although it is on the basis of physics, chemistry and biology, close space observations, GNSS space geology observations, cruise hydrography and the batimetry maps of the ochinography. We have taken examples of their pools, micro and macro organisms and new types of discoveries and new DNA barcodes. “
“Thanks to these expeditions, we have produced more than 250 publications so far”
Prof. Dr. Yavaşoğlu stated that 19 projects made here will be the subject of the thesis, doctoral and master’s degree and will contribute to cultivation of human resources, “There are also scientific articles. These show how actively the science potential of our country has become not only within the country but also in the country.” He said.
Yavaşoğlu stated that they have produced more than 250 publications thanks to the expeditions they have completed so far and continued their words as follows:
“This shows three and more publications from each project. This shows how actively the gaps of the gaps for that region in the scientific community are filling. creates. “
“Projects this year focused on aquatic ecosystems”
Prof. Dr. Yavaşoğlu, this year, the projects are mainly concentrated on aquatic ecosystems, transferring, sea and lake water all over the island and soil samples on soil examples, he said.
Emphasizing the close space studies carried out on the island, Yavaşoğlu said, “We have the chance to examine the magnetic field of our world in many respects. Our seismometer continues to collect data. Thus, in terms of tectonic, volcanic or glacier -induced effects, the rest of the island is continued to recording and the data changes in the sea level. He said.
Yavaşoğlu said that the island has made many drone flights to update both sea and land maps.
Yavaşoğlu pointed out that the firsts took place every year, “The follow -up of the climate change and the first data of the glacier year, both close space and glaciers, we have started the work showing the changes.” He said.
“Observation and sampling studies in the field of geology”
9. Göksu Uslular said that observation and sampling studies were carried out in the field of geology at the time and said that the researches on this issue were concentrated on Deception Island, which is among the islands of South South in the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula.
Uslular expressed that this is one of the most active volcanoes of Antarctica, said that there is a Kaldera volcano on the island with magmatic activity.
On the other hand, the Turkish Scientific Research Camp and its environs were visually recorded for 3 years with the record device deployed to the point of the GNSS station on the Horseshoe Island. Data were provided to the studies on glacial and sea ice observations of the photo and video recordings obtained from here.
